With the support of her family, she resisted the usual career path as an art teacher and instead decided to invest the next couple of years pursuing a career as a professional artist. Working as a model in the figure drawing classes at the college provided Sheena with some income but, more importantly, gave her the ongoing support of an ‘art community’ where she could benefit from the professional advice and guidance of her past tutors and serve as a role model for current students.

In a short time, Sheena has garnered significant critical attention for her animated videos which focus on her subjective experiences of urban spaces, notably Bridgetown. Her work has been shown at the “Black Diaspora Visual Arts” exhibition in Barbados and at “Rockstone & Bootheel: Contemporary West Indian Art” at Real Art Ways in Harford, Connecticut. She has participated in artists’ residencies at Alice Yard in Trinidad and Greatmore Studios in Cape Town, South Africa. She has also been invited to show her work at the 2010 British Film Festival in London and is currently working towards her first solo exhibition.

Tracy HinksonHospitality Institute“I was a student at the Hospitality Institute during the period 1996- 1998 and there I completed the program Tourism and Travel. I totally enjoyed those two years and I would definitely say that those two years had equipped me with the necessary skills for my first job directly after college at one of the islands’ prestigious hotels as a Front Desk Clerk.

I enjoyed the practical aspect of the program the best since I consider myself an outgoing friendly person. The skills I learnt from the Front Desk, Housekeeping and Food and Beverage areas prepared me for many jobs later in life. As I look at the economic situation the country is facing I know that I chose the most versatile field since after my studies I worked at Front Desk, Housekeeping and Food and Beverage Departments at different hotels.

I fondly remember the tutors and instructors to be nurturing and at times firm. I remembered one tutor’s encouragement at the beginning of my first (term) now semester, and that gave me the will- power to work diligently and complete the programme. Directly after completing the programme I worked in the tourism industry for four years and then I went on to the University of the West Indies to complete my Bachelors in Hospitality and Tourism Studies.

The skills and knowledge acquired from the Hospitality Institute benefited me greatly and for the last eight years I have shared some of that knowledge with the students at the Institute in the capacity of Part-time Tutor in the subject areas of Human Relations and Basic Housekeeping. I am also the owner and operator of a Day Care and Nursery School and manage a small staff complement of eight persons. The skills learnt from the Hospitality Institute such as customer service, marketing and accounting all assist me in the day to day operation of my small business.”
