BCC STUDENTS AWARDED THE ELAP AND CANADA-CARICOM SCHOLARSHIPS

Eighteen (18) final year students from the Barbados Community College travelled to Canada at the start of the 2011 Fall semester as scholarship awardees of the Emerging Leaders of the Americas Programme (ELAP) and the Canada-CARICOM scholarship programme, offered by the Canadian Bureau for International Education (CBIE).  Four (4) students will be continuing their studies at Lambton College of Arts and Technology for a period of two semesters, four students (4) will be going to Lakeland College in Alberta, Seven (7) students will be going to Canadore College in Ontario, and three (3) students will be going to St. Lawrence College, Ontario.

The broad aim of these programmes is to serve to enhance the skill sets required to advance the development and sustainability of CARICOM. They also seek to strengthen institutional linkages between Canadian universities and colleges, and those in the region.

The scholarships focus on areas such as good governance, rule of law, democratic development, as well as developing skills required to enhance the regions’ prosperity through the pure and applied sciences (such as environmental science and information technology), economic and trade policy issues, teaching and other subjects specific to the needs of the regions.

The Canada–CARICOM Leadership Scholarships Program is facilitated through student exchange agreements and institutional collaborations between Canadian and regional institutions. These agreements, the Graduate Student Exchange Program (GSEP) and the College & Undergraduate Student Exchange Program (CUSEP) are created between colleges, technical or vocation institutions and universities.

The successful students are:
