The Board of Management of the Barbados Community College invites persons to fill the following vacant position:

The Accounts Department maintains procedures to ensure that all Divisions and Departments at the College are well supported and are provided with the resources they need to conduct the educational programmes.

Assistant Accountant

This individual is responsible for general accounting functions including preparing journal entries, maintaining balance sheet schedules and bank reconciliations. Assisting with month end closures.

Education and Experience:

• An associate degree in Accounting and not less than two (2) years’ relevant experience; or
• A CAPE Certificate in Accounting and four (4) years’ relevant experience; or
• At least four subjects at CSEC General Proficiency level including English Language and either Accounts or Mathematics and not less than five (5) years’ relevant experience.

Salary Scale: $3,206.41 - $3,730.44 (Z23-17)

JOB DESCRIPTION
ASSISTANT ACCOUNTANT


SUMMARY OF CORE FUNCTIONS:

To assist with the daily coordination and administration of the Accounts Department as well as budgeting functions as instructed by the Senior Accountant. Supervision of Clerical staff.

LIST OF DUTIES:

• Payroll and related deductions – monthly and bi-monthly

• Submission of Statutory Documents e.g NIS, PAYE and any other documents that may be required from time to time.

• Acting allowance and gratuities

• Part-Time payments

• Statistical records

• Direct supervision of the work of the officers involved in the preparation of the above

• Certifying payments related to the above.

• Assist with the preparation of Estimates in relation to Established Staff – Teaching and Non- Teaching

• Supervision of Cashiers

• Receipt of daily takings from Cashiers, preparation of summary records and deposits for banking

• Custody of stock of cheques and receipt books

• Maintaining Accounts Receivable records – assist with the reconciliation and collection of outstanding debts

• Assist with the preparation of the audit process.

• Carrying out such reasonable duties as may be assigned by the Finance Officer or any duly authorized officer.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• An associate degree in Accounting and not less than two (2) years’ relevant experience; or

• A CAPE Certificate in Accounting and four (4) years’ relevant experience; or

• At least four subjects at CSEC General Proficiency level including English Language and either Accounts or Mathematics and not less than five (5) years’ relevant experience.


KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS:

• Demonstrate knowledge of the mission and vision of the organization.
• Extensive knowledge of the functions and duties of the post and how they contribute to the mission and vision.
• Knowledge of CloudSuite Financial system and Colleague (Student Information System)
• Relevant knowledge of the Public Service Act CAP. 25.
• Relevant knowledge of the Employment Rights Act (ERA) 2012-19.
• Relevant knowledge of the Safety & Health at Work Act 2005-12.
• General knowledge of the BCC Staff Manual.
• Computer literacy.
• Telephone etiquette.
• Knowledge of operating electronic equipment provided.

•Proficiency in the use of all Microsoft applications.

•Demonstration of good Time Management skills.

•Demonstration of effective Interpersonal Relationship skills.

•Excellent Oral and written communication skills.

•Demonstrated ability to work with young people.

•Familiarity with Applied Information Technology.

CONDITIONS OF SERVICE:

• Sick days will be allowed but not to exceed two (2) days, after which you will be required to submit a medical certificate.

• Entitled to vacation as earned, maximum of thirty (30) days per calendar year.
