Overview

This course explores the concepts and theories in Criminology which seek to explain the reason why persons commit crime. It further explores and evaluates how crime is measured while examining the history of criminology, and the purposes of criminology.  It also provides an overview and critical assessment of the major theories of crime causation.  The course will also introduce the learner to the critical concept of crime prevention and discuss aspects of victimology.  It will specifically examine the history of criminology, the purpose of criminology, the use of Trait Theory, Social Structure Theory, Social Process Theory, Conflict theory and developmental theories to understand crime.

Objectives

This course is designed to enable students to:

  1. Discuss the main theories of Criminology.
  2. Compare and contrast criminological theories and highlight their strengths and weaknesses.
  3. Demonstrate an understanding of the various means of measuring crime and their limitations
  4. Demonstrate the application of various theories of crime to explain criminal activity and means of crime prevention
  5. Apply theories of crime to the Caribbean reality and formulate strategies to reduce crime in the populations
  6. Describe the concept of crime prevention and explain its various types namely social, situational and community crime prevention
  7. Demonstrate an understanding of who are victims of crime and describe their major concerns
