Overview

The curriculum is structured that graduates will have a broad-based education in the many aspects of Physical Education, Health and Fitness.  Many scientific aspects of Physical Education are examined.  They include Anatomy and Physiology, Health and Nutrition, Psycho-social Aspects of sport, as well as the analysis of various sports skills and human movement.  Students must successfully complete a teaching practicum of approximately 6 weeks’ duration.

Additionally, students will take twelve (12) credits in the Core subjects of English and Communication, Caribbean Politics and Society, Ethics and Citizenship, and Mathematics.

 

Objectives

The Associate Degree in Applied Science (Physical Education) is designed for persons with goals of entering the field of Physical Education, Recreation and Sport, and for those who are already involved in these areas and want to increase their knowledge of the discipline.

Admission Requirements

Applicants with four (4) CSEC General (O’ Level) certificates or equivalent, including English Language may be accepted.

Mature Applicants

Persons 25 years or older who do not satisfy the above academic requirements may be admitted to the College as mature students. Such persons may be required to attend an interview to determine their eligibility for admission.

Job Opportunities

On completion of the programme, graduates will be qualified to work in the areas of teaching and coaching, either at primary, secondary or tertiary level as well as in the wider community; for example, health and sports clubs and the hospitality industry. 

Graduates of the programme have been well received and employed at primary and secondary schools throughout the island and in the hospitality industry.

 

Academic Opportunities

Universities in the US have readily accepted graduates from this programme, who have then been able to complete their full degree after approximately two (2) years of additional study. Some graduates have since completed Masters and Doctoral Degrees in branches of Kinesiology.

Description of Courses

This programme is presently offered over a period of three (3) years of study. This includes six (6) semesters with class attendance on one (1) full day and three (3) evenings per week. 

In order to qualify for the award of the Associate Degree in Applied Science - Physical Education, a student must    complete a minimum total of 79 credits which will include: 

  • Twelve (12) credits in compulsory core courses
  • Sixty-four (64) credits in Physical Education components
  • A minimum of three (3) credits in a subject area outside the main areas of study.

Note: One (1) credit is equivalent to 15 lecture hours. However, in the Skills Analysis courses the laboratory component must satisfy the requirement that the student complete at least fifty percent (50%) more class hours in order to earn the credit.
