The Barbados Community College and BIBA – The Association for Global Business teamed up in October to showcase careers for its students.

The event was in celebration of Global Business Week and was open to the public, with many secondary schools also in in attendance.

While the showcase is traditionally hosted at the University of the West Indies (UWI) Cave Hill campus, BCC happily welcomed the BIBA team to its Eyrie campus for the first time, allowing students to explore what careers await them in the global market.

BIBA Marketing and Communications officer Mialisa Garnes was impressed by the turnout and expressed her desire to extend the event over several days and allow more students to take advantage of the opportunity.

“They came out in droves this morning from even before the showcase started and they're just eager to learn more.”

She explained that Barbadians shouldn’t limit their career options, and hopes that the day expanded the minds of the soon-to-be professionals in attendance.

Many students were especially interested in the internships advertised by the businesses, with some hoping to secure positions over the Christmas and summer holidays.

BCC student Tárisha Robinson thanked organisers for educating her on the next steps towards her career and revealed that she intends to apply for the Financial Service Commission winter internship.

Many industries were represented at the event; accounting, marketing, and risk management to name a few, allowing students to learn about jobs that aren’t traditionally taught in secondary school.

BCC Commerce Senior Tutor Claire Millington appreciated BIBA’s support and expressed her satisfaction in seeing how enthusiastically students engaged with the event.

The career showcase ran from 10 AM to 3 PM and remained busy throughout the day, leading the college open to hosting the event again next year.
