BCC Salutes Health and Safety Champion

A long serving staff member has been recognized for his contribution to ensuring the safety and health of all those who use the college.

And while he appreciates the recognition, Dr Samuel Miller was quick to point out that it was the contribution of the entire Safety and Health Committee that is responsible for the extensive amount of work that has been done.

Dr. Miller, who is also the Director of Research and Shop Steward of the National Union of Public Workers, has dedicated the past year and a half as Chairperson, rigorously championing the wellbeing of the college community.

Responsible for improvements in air quality, temperature control, and general workplace safety, his scientific approach to tackling challenges has led to noticeable changes across the campus during his tenure.

BCC Principal Annette Alleyne thanked Dr. Miller for his contributions to the college, applauding his efforts and wishing him well in his continuing career at the college, recalling the time when her car caught ablaze and Dr. Miller jumped to her aid.

“Over the years, even without being asked, he took the lead in all the health and safety concerns here at the BCC and brought them to the fore.”

And Dr. Miller said working with the H&S Committee has been particularly satisfying.

“I'm proud of the work that we did because the committee is not the chair and we work really well together and that's one of the really great blessings so to speak of being the chair of that committee.”

He has been a part of the college family for 35 years, serving in various roles, but now secures research funding for staff, answers academic queries, and produces key institutional reports.

Although he has officially stepped down from the chairmanship due to the increasing demands of his other responsibilities, Dr. Miller continues to support the committee.

His leadership and longstanding commitment have left a lasting impact on the College’s culture of safety, collaboration, and care.
