The Barbados Community College and Flow teamed up in April to celebrate International Girls in ICT Day.
An abbreviation of Information and Communication Technology, the international initiative is designed to encourage young women to pursue careers in technology and is celebrated every year on the fourth Thursday in April.
While this isn’t the first time the BCC and Flow have collaborated in honour of the occasion, the college was happy to welcome the Flow team to its Eyrie campus, where students met with the professionals to discuss their place in an ever-changing industry.
BCC Marketing and Management student Nikaylah Brock left excited to pursue her dreams and thanked the Flow team for making an effort to encourage young women like herself.
“It was very interesting and informative. It gave me a lot of information and more encouragement to actually work in this field as not many women are in it.”
The Flow representatives were primarily women from various divisions within the regional company, and spoke on their experience as women, sometimes in male-dominated fields.
BCC Commerce Senior Tutor Claire Millington appreciated Flow’s continued support and stressed the importance of addressing the barriers students may have to face when entering the workforce.
“We find women in all aspects of the workplace; in management, in administration, in engineering, in computing and so on and they were all represented on the team so we're very grateful to them.”
Many students showed interest in the internship opportunities Flow was offering, attending the event resumes in hand.
Mrs. Millington noted that several BCC students have seen success pursuing these internships in the past and was happy to see today’s students pursuing the positions with similar enthusiasm.
Satisfied with this year’s event, she expressed her excitement in next year’s edition, confident that the BCC will continue to work with Flow perhaps even moving the event to their headquarters the following year.
