Beyond the Classroom: Language Centre Students Engage in a Month of Cultural Discovery

Throughout the month of November, students of the Language Centre have had the opportunity to explore the variety of cultural experiences their courses offer. From sports days to exhibits their tutors have taken their studies beyond the four walls of a classroom.

Speaking on the importance of these initiatives, Senior Tutor of the Language Centre Katherene Moseley-Holder explained that not only do students respond positively to those sorts of programs, but they become more well-rounded graduates.

“For us, language acquisition is not just about learning grammar and vocabulary. It's about developing self-confidence, problem-solving skills, empathy, tolerance, cultural awareness and passion for learning.”

One such program was the EFL Sports Day organised in collaboration with the Physical Education Department. Students were able to explore different cultures through hands-on experiences, providing greater context to their studies.

The annual event was conceptualised over a decade ago and tutors were happy to see their pupils engaging with the activities be it road tennis, cricket or netball.

Later on in the month students took part in Bajan Day, a cultural exhibit celebrating Independence Day and hosted in the Science Auditorium.

There students conversed amongst each other, further enriching their learning in what Katherene Moseley-Holder described as a unique benefit of pursuing languages at the Barbados Community College.

Enjoying Barbadian games, music, quizzes and food, students described the experience as a delightful break from their lectures expressing their gratitude to their tutors for organising the event.

“It teaches you a lot about culture and not just Barbadian culture but culture of the other people and how we all are really interlinked in some way.” Said one associates degree student.

Students can look forward to similar future events, with conferences, island tours and film screenings all planned for the academic year ahead.
