“When a Bajan Says…”
That was the statement on the lips of a special group of students recently, including four from the Barbados Community College’s Liberal Arts Department.
It formed the basis of a new national interschool gameshow which saw the BCC’s Asher Bynoe Chewit, Chloe Blackman, Gianna Thorpe, and Rogero Best, come up against teams from Harrison College, Lester Vaughan Secondary and Daryll Jordan Secondary.
And from the first of in the series of one-on-one rounds, the students were eager to show that despite being young, they have a good grasp of Barbadian culture and sayings
BCC student Asher Bynoe Chewit was more than satisfied with his team and remains excited for the results.
“The NationNews competition was extremely engaging. I fully enjoyed it and I liked competing with other schools.”
The show will hit the airwaves during our independence season, and is expected to entertain the BCC family and Barbadian public at large.
BCC Tutor Cherish Holmes congratulated her pupils, confident they had done the college proud.
“I'm very pleased in how dedicated they were in terms of preparing for the competition and how competitive they were.”
She explained that it was important for the next generation of Barbadians to engage with their culture, and that the show provided an opportunity to keep the national dialect alive.
“I began to recognize that students can read but they don't know how to read dialect. So the ability then to engage with some words and expressions that came from our own distinct Barbadian culture was a great opportunity for us.”
So will Team BCC come out on top or will one of the teams from Harrison College, Lester Vaughan and Daryll Jordan be victorious in this inaugural competition? Your guess is as good as mine, but log on to the Nation’s social media pages every Wednesday and Friday starting November 6th to find out!
Best of luck to the team.
