Calling on the generosity of its faculty and students in support of ongoing Jamaica relief efforts, the Barbados Community College (BCC) is proudly announcing its very own student-led charity drive in support of those affected by Hurricane Melissa.
Following the devastating Category 5 system, BCC nursing student Reba Watts was moved to help her Caribbean neighbours and, upon discovering no such initiative existed at the college, decided she would take the first step in organising the charity drive.
A former emergency responder, Reba explained that she understood all too well how important it was to lend a hand adding that if she were in their position, she would want someone to help her out.
“I saw one documentary where the walls and the buildings were all destroyed and if Barbados really had to go through something this I would want somebody to help me.”
Donation receptacles can be found at the Counselling and Placement Centre, behind the bookstore, and will be accepting donations for a week.
Deputy Principal Samuel Bowen applauded Reba for her efforts and generous actions, stressing the importance having an empathetic and passionate student body.
“That is something we will always support. Seeing our students stepping forward and realising their critical role to support not only regional efforts but also helping humanity. That intrinsic motivation to help others is key.”
Reba Watts explained that while the logistical challenge of getting the donations to Jamaica initially proved daunting, she attributed her decision to go ahead anyways to the enthusiastic encouragement of her tutors, particularly her Paediatrics Tutor, who helped Reba set up the drive and get in touch with the relevant authorities.
The relief drive is accepting hygiene products, such as soaps, wipes, razors, toothpaste and more and those interested in reaching out to Reba can contact her through her student email address at reba.watts@bcc.edu.bb.
