Shaping the Future Together: BCC Staff Embrace Innovation and Growth

The BCC Staff Development Meeting brought together faculty and staff for a day of reflection, learning, and forward-looking discussions on the college’s role in shaping its future and contributing to Barbados.

The event opened with an address from BCC Principal Annette Alleyne, who emphasized the importance of Mission Barbados 2030 and its six national goals: Sustainable Development, Social Cohesion and National Identity, Food and Water Security, Public Health and Safety, Worker Empowerment and Enfranchisement, and Digital Transformation.

She noted that “while BCC already makes meaningful contributions through its programmes and initiatives, there are still opportunities to strengthen its impact on national development.”

Staff were reminded that education extends beyond the classroom and plays a vital role in addressing social, economic, and environmental challenges.

A key highlight was the announcement of $12.5 million in funding for digital transformation projects, including upgraded Wi-Fi, smart classrooms, digitized records, enhanced library services, backup generators, expanded water storage, and modern teaching technologies.

Discussions also focused on artificial intelligence, academic integrity, and the importance of fostering a culture of communication, respect, inclusion, and employee empowerment.

The second presentation, led by Human Resources Assistant, Deidre Morris-Estwick, focused on effective leave management as a key factor in staff well-being and operational efficiency.

It was reiterated that “staff should submit vacation leave requests at least one month in advance, to follow all required notice periods, and that managers are encouraged to plan and monitor leave schedules to ensure adequate staffing and smooth operations.”

The presentation also addressed challenges caused by overlapping leave requests and encouraged staff to plan leave during less busy periods where possible. Employees were reminded to complete written handovers before going on leave to ensure continuity of work and reduce disruptions.

Communication, transparency, and accurate record-keeping were identified as essential components of effective leave administration. The Human Resources Department reaffirmed its commitment to supporting staff and promoting work-life balance through regular breaks, physical activity, and reduced screen time.

Public Relations Specialist, Lisa Brome, delivered the third and final presentation which focused on communication, social media use, WhatsApp, and media relations. Staff were encouraged to create positive, engaging, and student-centred content that highlights the achievements of students and staff while maintaining professionalism and inclusivity.

Emphasis was placed on ensuring that concerns are first addressed through internal channels before being shared publicly, and that all content aligns with the college’s branding standards.

The presentation further clarified that WhatsApp should only be used as a supplementary communication tool and must not replace official teaching or administrative systems. Staff were reminded not to require students to use WhatsApp and to maintain clear professional boundaries, confidentiality, and appropriate communication at all times.

Additionally, it was stressed that official statements on behalf of the college can only be made by designated representatives and that all media interactions must follow established protocols to ensure proper coordination with administration, security, and the PR office.

Overall, the meeting reinforced that BCC’s growth and success are driven by its people. Through discussions on national development, digital innovation, workplace wellness, and professional communication, staff were encouraged to continue playing a central role in strengthening the institution and contributing to the future development of Barbados.
